If you’re looking for the definitive word on where every
species of bird breeds in the United States, look no further than each state’s
Breeding Bird Atlas, an entirely volunteer-based survey hosted by the U.S.
Geologic Survey. Florida first conducted its Breeding Bird Atlas from 1986 to
1991. Back then, 120 species of birds were confirmed breeding in Miami-Dade
county. Now, Florida is conducting its second Atlas and so far only 33 species
have been confirmed breeding in Miami-Dade. This blog will document my
explorations all over this big, beautiful county as I try to flesh out those
numbers. If you know nothing about birds or Miami's ecology, feel free to ask questions!
If you know a lot about either, please share your knowledge in the comments!
