Introduction

If you’re looking for the definitive word on where every species of bird breeds in the United States, look no further than each state’s Breeding Bird Atlas, an entirely volunteer-based survey hosted by the U.S. Geologic Survey. Florida first conducted its Breeding Bird Atlas from 1986 to 1991. Back then, 120 species of birds were confirmed breeding in Miami-Dade county. Now, Florida is conducting its second Atlas and so far only 33 species have been confirmed breeding in Miami-Dade. This blog will document my explorations all over this big, beautiful county as I try to flesh out those numbers. If you know nothing about birds or Miami's ecology, feel free to ask questions! If you know a lot about either, please share your knowledge in the comments!
